Since Saturday, March 19th AMERIKA has opened – it is a new space for photography, sculpture and installation located at Brunnenstrasse 7 in Berlin.
»I like to be in America«, says the West Side Story expressing a certain longing for a place that provides boundless possibilities for everyone. Though, kept in perspective, this has turned out to be a misapprehension. The longing, however, still persists and therefore the enthralment of the name has not diminished: ›Amerika‹ is still possible.
A group of young artists has chosen this heading to explore new territories in AMERIKA. The majority of them being at the beginning of their career, all of the artists are imprinted by the artistic productivity and concentrated atmosphere of the Leipzig art academy and excel in a high degree of autonomy.
Yet, in the heterogeneity of their approaches they are linked by the attempt to transform experienced reality and to scrutinize critically the common current. AMERIKA in Berlin provides them the platform to act independently and to assert themselves on an international basis. Photography, sculpture and installations are the artistic means to which they resort and through which they sketch their point of view according to their credo: in art we trust.
